Parents naturally feel proud when a young child recites the alphabet, counts to 100, names colours, repeats long rhymes or remembers multiplication tables.

These abilities may reflect a strong memory. However, repeating information and understanding it are not always the same thing.

Some children can recite long sequences accurately but may struggle to use the same information in daily life. A child may count from one to 20 but may not be able to give a parent two spoons. Another child may name every colour in a video but may not identify the colour of their own shirt when asked.

This difference is known as the difference between rote learning and meaningful learning.

What Is Rote Learning?

Rote learning involves remembering information through repetition.

Examples include:

  • reciting numbers in a fixed order;
  • repeating the alphabet;
  • memorising multiplication tables;
  • singing an entire rhyme;
  • repeating names of animals, planets or vehicles;
  • copying a familiar answer without understanding the question.

Rote learning is not useless. Memory is an important part of learning, and many children with autism may have strong abilities in recognising patterns, sequences or familiar information.

The problem begins when memorisation is mistaken for complete understanding.

What Is Meaningful Learning?

Meaningful learning occurs when the child understands a concept and can use it in different situations.

For example, meaningful number learning means that the child can:

  • give two biscuits when asked;
  • count three blocks accurately;
  • understand which group has more;
  • match the number “4” with four objects;
  • use numbers during shopping, play or household routines.

Meaningful language learning means that the child can use words to request, answer, comment, refuse, describe or share an experience—not merely repeat words heard from another person or a screen.

The real test of learning is not whether the child can repeat the answer. It is whether the child can use the skill when the material, person or situation changes.

Why Can Rote Learning Be Misleading?

A memorised sequence can look advanced. Parents may believe that a child who counts to 100 should immediately move towards larger numbers or more difficult academic material.

But if the child does not understand quantities from one to five, teaching numbers up to 100 may add more memorisation without developing the underlying concept.

Similarly, a child may say, “Apple, ball, cat, dog,” in response to the alphabet but may not use the word “apple” to ask for one or identify it during a meal.

This does not mean that the child lacks intelligence. It means that the learning goal needs to move from repetition towards understanding and practical use.

How Can Parents Check Whether Learning Is Meaningful?

Parents can make a small change to the task.

For example, if the child has learned to count five red blocks, ask them to count five spoons, five toys or five steps. If the child knows colours from flashcards, ask them to find a blue object in the room.

A child who understands the concept should gradually be able to use it with:

  • different objects;
  • different people;
  • different instructions;
  • different locations;
  • a different order of questions.

If the child can answer only when the same card, video or question is presented in the same way, the skill may still be dependent on memorisation or prompting.

Teach Concepts Through Real Experiences

Children learn meaningful concepts more effectively when the information is connected with actions and everyday routines.

Teaching Numbers

Instead of repeatedly asking the child to count to 20:

  • ask for two plates;
  • place three toys in a box;
  • give one biscuit to each person;
  • count steps while climbing;
  • compare a group of two objects with a group of five.

Teaching Colours

Instead of using only colour cards:

  • sort clothes by colour;
  • find a red fruit;
  • choose between two coloured cups;
  • match socks;
  • identify colours during drawing or play.

Teaching Language

Instead of asking the child to repeat words:

  • create situations in which the word is useful;
  • encourage the child to request an item;
  • give choices;
  • pause during a familiar activity;
  • help the child comment on something interesting.

Teaching Shapes

Instead of memorising shape names:

  • find circles in the home;
  • match lids to containers;
  • identify the shape of a plate, window or block;
  • sort objects by shape.

Learning becomes stronger when the child uses the concept rather than merely naming it.

Do Not Rush Towards Bigger Targets

Parents sometimes focus on how much the child can recite:

“How many numbers can the child say?”
“How many words can the child read?”
“How many tables has the child memorised?”

A more useful question is:

“What can the child do with what they have learned?”

There is little benefit in pushing from counting to 10 towards counting to 50 if the child does not yet understand what “three” means.

A smaller concept used independently is more valuable than a long sequence repeated without understanding.

Balance Academic and Functional Goals

Academic learning is important, but it should not replace communication, self-care, social understanding and practical independence.

A child may know the names of every planet but still need help requesting water. Another child may read complex words but struggle to answer a simple personal question.

Therapy and education should therefore include a balanced range of goals:

  • communication;
  • social participation;
  • daily-living skills;
  • play;
  • emotional regulation;
  • safety;
  • meaningful academic learning.

The child’s strengths should be respected and used as a foundation. A strong interest in numbers, letters or specific subjects can become a powerful teaching tool when connected with practical skills.

A Message for Parents

Do not stop appreciating your child’s memory. It may be a genuine strength.

But do not confuse repetition with complete understanding.

The objective is not to make the child perform impressively in front of others. The objective is to help the child use knowledge to communicate, solve problems and participate more independently in daily life.

Before teaching more, check whether the child understands what has already been taught.
